Leading voice for the U.S. video game industry seeks global solutions to protect intellectual property

WASHINGTON –  The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI) to work together on issues impacting video game intellectual property protection and enforcement.

This collaboration demonstrates the commitment of both the ESA and IMPI to improve intellectual property enforcement measures in Mexico. The MOU outlines four key areas for collaboration, led by the ESA and IMPI, including:

  • Collaboration on intellectual property enforcement activities, including infringement referrals, online inspection visits and investigations
  • Promotion of the importance of intellectual property to creative and innovative industries
  • Public awareness campaigns about the value and importance of intellectual property to the video game industry
  • Collaboration with Mexican government agencies that work on intellectual property matters

The MOU will leverage the ESA’s expertise in the video game industry, combined with the IMPI’s experience on intellectual property issues in Mexico. Practical efforts to execute the MOU have already begun including  a ESA-led training for over 60 members of the IMPI enforcement team on issues specifically impacting the video game industry.

Intellectual property is a pillar issue for the video game industry, impacting creativity, innovation, jobs and player safety. As technology continues to expand, effective intellectual property standards are increasingly a global issue, requiring collaboration with organizations and governments in other countries. As the leading voice and advocate for the industry, the ESA is committed to strategic solutions that protect the art, ownership, and creators and players central to the video game experience.
