Position Title: Counsel, IP Protection & Security

Reporting To: Vice President, IP Protection & Security

Location: Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

Are you interested in a role in protecting some of the most popular games and characters on the market today? Are you highly motivated and skilled at protecting creative works through the DMCA, managing high profile investigations, threat hunting, and working in a collaborative environment? If yes, please consider joining the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) team as Legal Counsel for Intellectual Property Protection and Security. The Legal Counsel will assist with management of ESA’s content protection program, provide strategic direction for all enforcement programs, liaise with law enforcement and key stakeholders, and coordinate relevant IP policy issues with internal ESA team and members.

Duties of this role include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with the day-to-day operation of ESA’s intellectual property enforcement program, including overseeing work performed by outside legal and investigation firms
  • Providing legal advice on IP infringement-related matters to staff and vendors
  • Oversight and support of infringement and criminal investigations and prosecution of targets by law enforcement entities
  • Coordinating with ESA’s Legal, Government Affairs, and Communications & Public Affairs teams to identify legal, regulatory and policy issues relevant to IP enforcement in the video game industry
  • Managing meetings with member companies
  • Drafting reports, legal memoranda, and other appropriate materials for ESA and member companies

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor or Master of Laws degree
  • Minimum of 5 years legal experience
  • Active bar membership in at least one (1) U.S. jurisdiction
  • Ideally some combination of private practice, in-house and/or government/NGO experience
  • Working knowledge of the legal remedies that can be used to combat online intellectual property infringement
  • Negotiation, conflict resolution, and project management experience
  • Ability to communicate complex legal and policy issues and craft concise written messaging for a variety of audiences
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and consensus-building skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with the video game industry is a “plus” factor
