Industry Career Opportunities
Entertainment software is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. economy. In fact, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the sector remains "one of the above-average growth segments of the global entertainment industries through 2011." This success has generated increased interest in the industry's educational and career opportunities.
Education
American colleges and universities will offer 343 programs in game design, development and programming, including 301 undergraduate and 42 graduate programs, during the 2011-12 academic year. From New York University to the Art Institute of Seattle, academic institutions from coast to coast are offering programs in this growing field. The Entertainment Software Association Foundation has established a scholarship program to help train and educate the next generation of video game developers and designers. The Foundation's Scholarship Program, which is administered by International Scholarship & Tuition Services, provides resources to women and minority students pursuing careers in video game development. Employment
With computer and video games companies posting strong sales in 2011, entertainment software companies are growing as a source of employment in states and localities across the nation. Currently, computer and video game companies directly and indirectly employ more than 120,000 people in 34 states. The average salary for direct employees is $90,000, resulting in total national compensation of $2.9 billion.
