Video Game Industry’s Annual Fundraiser Celebrates Industry Luminaries
Washington, D.C. – January 5, 2017 – Legendary video game designer, Sid Meier, and Extra Life founder, Jeromy Adams, are the honorees for the 2017 Nite to Unite (NTU), the Entertainment Software Association Foundation (ESAF) announced today. Meier will be honored with the 2017 Champion Award and Adams with the 2017 Visionary Award. NTU, the U.S. video game industry’s annual philanthropic gala, raises funds to improve the lives of America’s children through the use of video games. The annual event will be held on February 28, 2017 in San Francisco, CA.
Nite to Unite honors leaders and visionaries making a profound difference through video games. It is also the video game industry’s annual event to raise funds in support of scholarships for the next generation of game makers and charitable organizations leveraging the power of interactive software.
“Sid Meier’s genius and creativity revolutionized how video games are played and their positive contributions. Many of today’s developers were drawn to this work because they were inspired by Sid’s creations, including the classic Civilization franchise,” said Anastasia Staten, executive director of the ESA Foundation, the video game industry’s charitable organization. “Sid’s honor celebrates the vision and commitment he has brought to our industry over the last three decades.”
Sid Meier is heralded often as “The Godfather of Computer Games” for his innovative and strategy simulation games, including one of the most beloved strategy franchises of all-time, Civilization. The Co-Founder and Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games, Meier has spent more than thirty years in the industry inspiring generations of players to pursue careers in game development. In 1982 he created one of the very first combat flight simulators, F-15 Strike Eagle which sold more than 1 million units worldwide. In October 2016, the sixth installment of the Civilization series was released, marking the 25th Anniversary of the successful brand. Meier was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science’s “Hall of Fame” for Lifetime Achievement in 1999. In 2002, he was inducted into the Computer Museum of America’s Hall of Fame.
Jeromy Adams created the successful Extra Life – a fundraising program that has mobilized a community of gamers to raise almost $30 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® (CMN Hospitals) through gaming marathons. Adams created Extra Life in 2008 after meeting a young girl named Victoria (Tori) Enmon, who was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Today, thanks to Jeromy Adams’s vision and leadership, gamers from around the world contribute to CMN Hospitals through Extra Life.
“Extra Life harnesses the best of what makes video games so great. Bringing people together to help those who are in need and doing so through video games,” said Staten. “Jeromy’s work, combined with the hundreds of thousands who support it, have made a difference in the lives of countless children and their families across the country.”
Nite to Unite 2017 will take place at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco at 7PM on February 28, 2017. Sponsorships and tickets are still available for purchase. For more information about supporting the event, visit www.nitetounite.org or contact Anastasia Staten at AStaten@theESA.com.
